Access to technology is essential for participating in today’s world. Yet across Australia, many people still do not have access to a reliable device, limiting their ability to learn, work, connect and access services.
This week, Australia takes an important step forward.
The Australian Government, working with the Business Council of Australia, Good Things Australia and WorkVentures, will begin developing a new Technology Reuse for Good Charter, a voluntary, principles based framework for industry and not for profit organisations to turn unused technology into opportunity for people who need it most.
A smarter way to use technology
Every year, thousands of high quality devices reach the end of their use in organisations, while many Australians go without.
The Technology Reuse for Good Charter will support organisations to adopt a reuse first approach, ensuring devices are securely wiped, refurbished and passed on to people experiencing digital exclusion.
It is a simple but powerful idea. Technology that is no longer needed by one organisation can become essential for someone else.
For individuals and families, access to a device can mean:
- Applying for jobs or completing training
- Accessing healthcare and essential services
- Supporting children with school and learning
- Staying connected to family, culture and community
This is about more than devices. It is about participation, opportunity and inclusion.
A practical opportunity for organisations to lead
The Charter will provide a clear, practical pathway for organisations to create real impact from their existing technology.
By committing to technology reuse, organisations can:
- Support Australians who are digitally excluded
- Reduce e waste and extend the life of valuable devices
- Contribute to sustainability and circular economy goals
- Strengthen ESG and corporate responsibility outcomes
- Demonstrate leadership as part of a coordinated national effort
With established processes for secure data wiping, refurbishment and redistribution, organisations can participate with confidence, knowing their devices will be handled safely and make a meaningful difference.
A national commitment to inclusion
The development of the Technology Reuse for Good Charter reflects a shared commitment across government, business and the community sector to ensure no one is left behind.
It brings together the scale of industry, the leadership of government and the expertise of social impact organisations to unlock thousands of devices and deliver measurable impact across Australia.
This is a practical, scalable solution to one of the most pressing challenges of our time, ensuring more Australians have the tools they need to participate fully in a digital world.
